AlphaTrak 3 is the meter vets themselves use, calibrated specifically for animal blood rather than the human meters that read a dog's glucose wrong. The starter kit comes with the meter, a lancing device, a small tub of test strips and control solution, enough to run a full at-home glucose curve your vet can use to fine-tune an insulin dose. It takes a tiny blood sample, usually from the ear flap, and gives a reading in about five seconds.
